COMPLETING THE FORM

12.2.1 Authority Name
Enter the name of your authority.
12.2.2 Ward
Enter the name of the target ward that the transect is assigned to into this box. It will be one of the five wards covered in this section of the survey.
12.2.3 Ward
If the transect is actually outside the target ward (see Sections 6.6 - 6.10 on Transect Distribution), circle ‘No’ in the ‘Target Ward’ box.
12.2.4 Low Density Social Housing Marker
This box is optional. If the transect is one which would have been classified as Low Density Social Housing for the previous BVPI 199 Cleanliness Performance Indicator, you can (if your authority wishes to be able to analyse the survey information for this land use) circle ‘Yes’ in this box as well as the NI 195 Land Use.
12.2.5 It is designed to provide information that would be useful in liaising with local Arms Length Management Organisations (ALMOs) or Large Scale Voluntary Transfer organisations (LSVTs).
12.2.6 Date
Write the date, preferably using two digits for the day and month and four for the year. For example, 9th August 2008 would be written 09/08/2008.
12.2.6 Time
Write the time using the 24-hour clock format. Half past eight in the morning would be 08:30; half-past three in the afternoon would be 15:30.
12.2.8 Surveyors
Write the initials of the surveyor(s).
12.2.9 Land Use Class
Circle the land-uses section for each site before starting to survey. If there is a mix of land-uses on the site, circle the main land-use for the site and the surrounding area. Circle only one land-use for each site.
12.2.10 Transect Location
Enter the name of the street, road, or recreational area into the top part of the box. If you are on an unnamed footpath or right-of-way, note this and the name of the nearest road.

Use the From / To area to record:
  • which section of a street is being surveyed (if it is a long street); or
  • which part of a Recreation Area is being surveyed; or,
  • any other information necessary to identify the transect precisely. In the section below, enter from where, and to where, the transect begins and ends.
Useful Tip
Always refer to points that are not likely to move or disappear, such as house numbers, lamp post numbers, or named shops. This is needed to locate the transect, particularly if several transects are assessed on one road, so do not use objects that are likely to move over time, for example, parked cars.

Please note that if authorities are using a hand held computer for data capture, and are using GPS facilities to assign a grid reference to a transect, it is still necessary to complete the transect location field in full.
12.2.11 Litter Grade
Circle the appropriate litter grade once you have walked the transect. Only circle one litter grade for each transect. For more information on litter and its grading, see section 8.0 on grading litter.
12.2.12 Detritus Grade
Circle the ‘not applicable’ option if it is not appropriate to grade detritus on this particular transect. Circle the appropriate detritus grade once you have walked the transect. Only circle one detritus grade for each transect.
12.2.13 Detritus Grade
For more information on detritus and its grading, see section 9.0 on grading detritus.
12.2.14 Graffiti Grade
Circle the appropriate graffiti grade once you have walked the transect. Only circle one graffiti grade for each transect. For more information on graffiti and its grading, see section 10.0 on grading graffiti.
12.2.15 Flyposting Grade
Circle the appropriate flyposting grade once you have walked the transect. Only circle one flyposting grade for each transect. For more information on flyposting and its grading, see section 11.0 on grading flyposting.
