This photo gallery has been compiled in order to try to assist local authority surveyors in making grading assessments for the NI 195 survey. |

For each of the four elements covered by NI 195 – litter, detritus, graffiti and flyposting – three examples are shown of Grades B, C and D, in different situations. |

In interpreting photos, it is important to remember that a view taken from one end of a transect may well miss details at the far end, and may therefore not show the complete picture. |
| 18.4 |
Because of this factor, grading assessments based on photos tend to ‘undergrade’. For example, a Grade B might be given on the basis of a photo, when on full inspection a Grade B – would be appropriate. |

This is the reason why no photos are given for intermediate grades, and why section 17.0 (AUDIT) indicates that it is not necessary for photographic records to be kept for audit purposes. |

For further comments on intermediate grades, please refer back to the sections on grading assessments (Litter – section 9.0; Detritus – section 10.0; Graffiti – section 11.0; Flyposting – section 11.0). |

When surveying a transect, it is important that surveyors walk the whole transect, paying close attention, before coming to a judgement on what grades to assign. Transects should always be surveyed on foot – never from a car. |
